Staff Goes Missional

The Light of Christ staff recently volunteered at the Goodwill drop-off site across the street from the church.  We had a great time meeting Ballantyne residents as they dropped off goods.  It was also a joy to get to know the two Goodwill workers who served with us.  They are, after all, some of our closest neighbors as they work just a few feet away from our parking lot.

We discovered that one of the workers was from Ecuador, where his father serves as the President of the country’s version of the Supreme Court.  No joke!  He’s working and studying in the US until he reaches the minimum age to follow in his father’s legal footsteps.  The other worker was a Charlotte native that is interested in going to mortuary school.

Serving God in the community certainly opens doors to meeting some amazing people.  Who does God have in store for you to meet next?

Bishop to Visit Light of Christ

Bishop Larry Goodpaster and his wife, Deborah, will attend both worship services at Light of Christ this Sunday, February 27.  The Bishop will be preaching the last sermon of the Rethink Church: Transform Lives series.  Bishop Goodpaster leads the 1100 United Methodist churches in Western North Carolina.  He is also the President of the College of Bishops of the United Methodist Church, placing him as the lead person for the entire denomination.  We are blessed that Bishop Goodpaster will be with us!

Taking It to the Street

Terri from the Light of Christ congregation shared a Rethink Church moment with me.  She recently took up running.  Terri posted on Facebook her plans to participate in an upcoming race.  Taking into consideration the Rethink Church ideas that “church”’ is a verb and that she is a missionary for God in everyday life, included in her post was an invitation to pray for her friends specifically as she ran in the race.  Terri, after all, had a lot of time to be prayerful.  Why not bring God and her friends together in the process?  What a creative and courageous idea!  Thanks, Terri, for your example of how we can be the church in our daily lives in our spheres of influence.

Do you have a Rethink Church story?  I would love to hear it.

Rethink Church

What if church was a verb rather than a place?
What if church focussed on people instead of programs?
What if church got out its head out of the sand and checked out the world around it?
What if we were to rethink church?
